The Lake City facility is a nearly 4,000 acre U.S. government-owned, contractor-operated facility established in 1941 to manufacture and test small caliber ammunition for the U.S. military. The facility produces nearly 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition per year, performs small caliber ammunition stockpile reliability testing, has ammunition and weapon testing responsibilities as the NATO National and Regional Test Center. LCAAP is the single largest producer of small arms ammunition for the U.S. military.
This new treatment facility replaces the WWII era water plant built with the original overall facility. This new plant supplies up to 3 million gallons per day for potable water and 1.3 million gallon per day for ultra pure production water. The water treatment process consists of lime softening with gravity filtration. Production water treatment includes an ion exchange stage.
Once the new facility was complete the next phase included demolition and repurposing of the 1941 water plant. This includes complete demolition of the existing plant, with the exception of the softener. The existing softener received new mechanism, piping and electrical to serve as a backup for the new plant.
